Characters from the upcoming animated movie “Cars 2″ are starring in a new public service video aimed at curbing distracted driving.

The U.S. Department of Transportation teamed up with Disney and Pixar to produce the 30-second ad. The tagline of the campaign is “One Text or Call Could Wreck It All.”

“We really value having partners like Disney and Pixar involved in our safety mission,” the Department of Transportation says in a blog post, “especially when it comes to instilling safe driving behavior among young people from an early age.”

Disney has made the ad available in more than a dozen countries, even translating the international versions from English at no cost.

One-fifth of injury accidents in 2009 involved distracted driving, according to the Department of Transportation. In 2009, nearly 5,500 people were killed in U.S. crashes related to distracted driving and another 448,000 were injured.

“Cars 2″ is scheduled for release June 24.
