If I’m a tenant, am I required to buy renters insurance?

Tenants are generally not required to buy renters insurance. However, some apartment communities or landlords may require it as a condition of the lease. But even if your landlord doesn’t require you to have renters insurance, every renter should have it. It’s an inexpensive financial safety net that costs less than $200 per year on average nationwide.
