The health insurance exchanges opened for business on October 1, 2013. A health insurance exchange is a government-run marketplace where people can buy health insurance that has 10 essential benefits, including prescription and maternity coverage.
Residents in every state will have access to an exchange – however, while some states have opted to run their own exchanges, or are running them in partnership with the government, many states have opted to let their exchange default to the federal exchange. So if you live in one of the default states, you have options for where you can purchase your health insurance.
You can find out whether you're eligible for a subsidy using our Obamacare Eligibility Calculator. Our calculator will also route you to the website where you can purchase a health insurance plan.
Below is the exchange information for every state and the District of Columbia.
