Polis’ legislation, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act, would remove the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s control over marijuana and would let states decide whether to allow marijuana to be used for medical or recreational purposes. Blumenauer’s legislation, the Marijuana Tax Equity Act, would create a federal excise tax on marijuana.
Eighteen states and the District of Columbia already permit the use of medical marijuana. In addition, Colorado and Washington voters recently approved recreational use of pot.
