| With more than 2.6 million fans on Facebook, Progressive’s Flo delivers a social media knockout. |
“You make my day that much brighter when you get excited about car insurance. You have those little quirks and it makes me smile. Don’t stop making people smile no matter what rude things they say to you,” a Flo fan wrote on Facebook.
Behind Flo in Facebook fandom is Allstate’s Mayhem, the disaster-causing character. He had nearly 400,000 Facebook fans as of March 31.
“One of the best ad campaigns ever! Mayhem personified. Kudos to the ad person who thought Mayhem up!” one fan wrote on Mayhem’s Facebook page.
Meanwhile, Alfac’s talking (and quacking) duck had more than 242,000 fans on Facebook, and GEICO’s Gecko had more than 156,000. Until recently, actor Gilbert Gottfried provided the voice for the Aflac duck; however, Gottfried was fired after making insensitive remarks about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
Flo, Mayhem, the Aflac duck and GEICO’s Gecko are the top four advertising icons on Facebook, according to AdAge.com.
