What Car Insurance Is Required in Las Vegas?

Drivers in Las Vegas follow Nevada’s rules. Every owner of a registered vehicle must keep liability insurance of at least:

The policy must be written for Nevada by an insurer authorized in the state, and the Nevada DMV checks coverage electronically. Our Nevada requirements guide covers the penalties for a lapse and for driving uninsured.

How to Lower Your Car Insurance Rate in Las Vegas

  1. Compare GEICO and CSAA first. They have the two lowest full-coverage averages among the four major insurers we compared in Las Vegas, about $427 and $461 a month.
  2. Quote several insurers. Among the four major insurers we compared in Las Vegas, the lowest and highest averages are about $173 a month apart for the same driver and car.
  3. Never let coverage lapse while your plates are active. Nevada checks insurance electronically, and even a one-day lapse will result in a registration suspension and a reinstatement fee that starts at $250, according to the Nevada DMV. If a car will sit unused, cancel its registration first.
  4. Compare at every renewal. Over the past nine months, GEICO has raised its average 9.9% and Allstate 7.9%, so the order in our table can shift.
  5. Ask about discounts and check your deductible. Many insurers lower rates for a clean driving record, paying in full or insuring more than one car, so ask which discounts you qualify for. Our full-coverage prices use $500 deductibles. A higher deductible lowers your premium but means you pay more yourself after a claim; see how car insurance deductibles work.
  6. Bundle your car and home insurance. Many insurers discount both policies when you buy them together. Check Las Vegas home insurance rates, and compare homeowners insurance quotes before you shop. Renters can often bundle a renters insurance policy too.

Coverage requirements come from Nevada law and the Nevada Division of Insurance. We refresh these figures when new rate data is released.
