For a 40-year-old driver with a clean record, Cary car insurance averages about $146 a month ($1,754 a year) for full coverage, based on the rates insurers had filed with state regulators as of Aug. 31, 2026. That’s 5% below the North Carolina average of $154 a month. Progressive and State Farm are effectively tied for the lowest full-coverage average among the insurers we rank, at about $82 and $84 a month.
Cary is one of the less expensive cities in our North Carolina data: about $10 a month less than Raleigh and about $8 a month less than the state average.

Full coverage in Cary averages $1,754 a year, or about $146 a month, for our benchmark driver. Liability-only coverage at 30/60/25 limits averages $630 a year ($53 a month), and 50/100/50 liability with comprehensive and collision averages $1,803 ($150 a month).
Progressive and State Farm are effectively tied for the lowest full-coverage average among the five insurers in our Cary rate data. Of the six published 2026 statewide North Carolina rate studies we reviewed, the one whose figures are also built from Quadrant rate data ranks Erie Insurance cheapest for full coverage. Four of the other five rank Progressive first, and only one of those five includes Erie. For liability-only coverage at 30/60/25 limits, State Farm has the lowest average among the insurers we price, at about $32 a month, followed by Progressive at $37.

Full coverage at 100/300/100 limits costs a little less on average than 50/100/50 in our Cary data: $1,754 a year compared with $1,803, with the same $500 deductibles. The full-coverage package doubles the per-person injury limit, triples the per-crash limit and doubles the property damage limit, and it raises uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to 100/300. Allstate and GEICO charge less for 100/300/100 than for 50/100/50 for our benchmark driver.
Not for our benchmark driver. Comparing the same insurers in the same Cary ZIP codes, full coverage averaged $1,847 a year in rates as of Nov. 30, 2025, and $1,754 as of Aug. 31, 2026, a 5.0% drop. Allstate cut its Cary average 7.5%, Progressive 4.9%, State Farm 4.7%, GEICO 2.8% and NC Farm Bureau 2.7%. Liability-only coverage at 30/60/25 limits fell 8.0%, led by State Farm, which cut its liability-only average 10.0%.
Wake County averages about $154 a month for full coverage, the 44th-most expensive of the 93 North Carolina counties we price, and western Wake County costs less than Raleigh.
Apex averages about $146 a month and Morrisville $146, about the same as Cary, while Raleigh averages $156. Where you live is one of the factors North Carolina insurers use, so neighboring cities can be priced differently.
