Full coverage in Tacoma averages $3,664 a year, or about $305 a month, for our benchmark driver. Liability-only coverage at Washington’s 25/50/10 minimum averages $1,397 a year ($116 a month), and 50/100/50 liability with comprehensive and collision averages $3,497 ($291 a month).
Safeco is far more expensive than the other insurers here: its full-coverage average of about $522 a month is 2.0 times the average of the other five. We keep it in our averages because it’s a rate the insurer filed with state regulators; without Safeco, the Tacoma average would be about $262 a month.
GEICO has the lowest full-coverage average among the six insurers in our Tacoma rate data. USAA, American Family, Travelers and Farmers aren’t in the Quadrant rate data we analyze, so their rows in the table are estimates. Among the published 2026 statewide Washington rate studies we reviewed, GEICO ranks cheapest for full coverage most often, apart from USAA, which sells only to military families; others put American Family, Oregon Mutual or Mutual of Enumclaw first. For liability-only coverage at 25/50/10 limits, GEICO has the lowest average among the insurers we price, at about $81 a month, followed by State Farm at $95.

Raising liability limits from 50/100/50 to 100/300/100 adds about $167 a year on average in our Tacoma data, with the same $500 deductibles. That’s about $14 a month for double the per-person injury limit, three times the per-crash limit and double the property damage limit, and the full-coverage package also raises uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to 100/300. Allstate charges less for 100/300/100 than for 50/100/50 in our data, so for that insurer the higher limits cost less.
Not for our benchmark driver. Comparing the five insurers that are in both sets of rates, in the same Tacoma ZIP codes, their full-coverage average fell from $4,016 a year in rates as of Nov. 30, 2025, to $3,948 as of Aug. 31, 2026, a 1.7% drop. State Farm cut its Tacoma average 8.0% and Progressive 4.9%, while PEMCO raised its average 1.2%, and Allstate and Safeco didn’t change theirs. GEICO isn’t in the November 2025 rates, so it’s left out, which is why these averages differ from the Tacoma average above. Liability-only coverage at 25/50/10 limits rose 6.6%, led by Progressive, which raised its liability-only average 31.3%.
Pierce County is the most expensive of the 33 Washington counties we price, at about $289 a month for full coverage, just ahead of King County ($283).
Nearby Pierce County towns are priced close to Tacoma: Lakewood averages about $291 a month, University Place $292, Puyallup $284 and Spanaway $298. Because Washington lets insurers set rates by where you keep your car, your exact address can move your price.

Kent, about 12 miles northeast, averages $296 a month, and Seattle, about 25 miles north, $292. Bellevue averages $267.
Drivers in Tacoma follow Washington’s rules. Every policy must include at least:
Insurers must also include underinsured motorist coverage, which in Washington covers uninsured and hit-and-run drivers too, and personal injury protection, unless you reject them in writing. Our Washington requirements guide covers the details and the penalties for driving uninsured.

Insurers must file their rates and rating rules with each state’s insurance regulator. Quadrant Information Services uses those filings to calculate what each insurer would charge a specific driver, and InsuranceQuotes analyzes those prices. This page uses rates in effect on Aug. 31, 2026.
Coverage requirements come from Washington law and the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner. We refresh these figures when new rate data is released.
