Four of the seven price Travelers below Erie, and two price Nationwide below it. For liability-only coverage at 15/30/5 limits, averages run from about $27 to $82 a month among these five insurers; the lowest is far enough below the rest that we don’t name a cheapest insurer for that coverage level.

Raising liability limits from 50/100/50 to 100/300/100 adds about $85 a year on average in our Scranton data, with the same $500 deductibles. That’s about $7 a month for double the per-person injury limit, three times the per-crash limit and double the property damage limit, and the full-coverage package also raises uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to 100/300. Allstate and Erie charge less for 100/300/100 than for 50/100/50 for our benchmark driver. The $85 step is the third-largest among our 11 Pennsylvania city guides.

Drivers in Scranton follow Pennsylvania’s rules. To register and drive a car, your policy must include at least $15,000 in bodily injury liability for one person, $30,000 for everyone hurt in one crash and $5,000 in property damage liability. Those liability limits are often written as 15/30/5. Your policy must also include $5,000 in medical benefits, which pay your own medical bills after a crash no matter who caused it.
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is optional, letting your coverage lapse can cost you your registration, and every policy asks you to choose full tort or limited tort. Our Pennsylvania requirements guide covers the penalties for driving uninsured, and our Pennsylvania tort guide compares the two tort options side by side. For our benchmark driver, a liability-only policy at those 15/30/5 limits averages $612 a year ($51 a month) in Scranton, compared with $641 statewide, and stepping up to 50/100/50 liability with comprehensive and collision brings the average to $2,119 a year.
