Each city guide has local prices, the cheapest insurers there and, for the bigger cities, ZIP-code detail. Waco is the cheapest city we cover and Houston the most expensive, a gap of about $64 a month for the same driver.

Compare Texas with other states on our car insurance rates by state page.

How Much Does Full Coverage Car Insurance Cost in Texas?

Full coverage costs about $1,665 a year more than a state-minimum policy in Texas, roughly $139 a month, because it adds comprehensive and collision coverage for your own car. Lenders require both if you finance or lease.

Higher liability limits are much cheaper. Moving from 50/100/50 to 100/300/100 liability, with comprehensive and collision on both, adds only about $210 a year ($18 a month) statewide in our data. The Texas minimum of $30,000 per injured person rarely covers a serious crash.

How Does Age Affect Car Insurance Costs

Age is a significant factor that affects Texas car insurance costs. Generally, younger and older drivers tend to pay higher premiums compared to drivers in their middle age. Here’s how age can influence car insurance costs:

  1. Young drivers (under 25): Statistically, young and inexperienced drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents. They are also prone to riskier driving behaviors, such as speeding or distracted driving. As a result, insurance companies consider them higher risk, and their premiums are typically more expensive.
  2. Middle-aged drivers (25-65): This age group is generally considered to be more experienced and responsible behind the wheel. They are statistically involved in fewer accidents and tend to have lower insurance premiums compared to younger and older drivers.
  3. Senior drivers (65 and older): As drivers get older, their risk profile may change due to factors such as declining vision, slower reflexes, and potential health issues. Insurance companies may increase premiums for older drivers to reflect these factors and the increased likelihood of accidents.

The table below comes from an additional InsuranceQuotes rate analysis with its own driver profile and shows how prices change with age. In it, a 17-year-old pays about 2.9 times what a 39-year-old pays for full coverage.

Texas Car Insurance Requirements (30/60/25 Liability)

Texas sets the rules for every driver in Texas. To register and drive a car, you need liability insurance of at least:

That’s known as 30/60/25 coverage. Insurers must also offer personal injury protection (PIP) of at least $2,500 per person and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Both are added to your policy unless you reject them in writing. The rules and penalties are explained in the Texas Department of Insurance auto insurance guide. Texas is an at-fault state, so the driver who causes a crash pays for the damage through their liability coverage.

Finding Auto Insurance Resources in Texas

If you want to know more about auto insurance in Texas, there are many places you can go. First, the Texas Department of Insurance website has important information on auto insurance and other types of coverage in the state.

There are two different offices for driver’s licenses and car registration. If you want to know how to get a new license, transfer your license or get your driving record, contact the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles or TxDMV, on the other hand, manages vehicle registration, inspections and even car dealer applications.

How Much Does Auto Insurance Cost in TX with a DUI Violation?

A DWI conviction raises Texas car insurance rates more than any other violation, and most insurers also require an SR-22 filing. Our filed-rate averages above are for a clean-record driver. Expect a DWI to raise your premium sharply for several years, so compare quotes again once it ages off your record.

This table shows how insurers priced a driver with a DUI in an additional InsuranceQuotes rate analysis with its own driver profile. USAA charged the least and AAA the most for full coverage, a gap of about 31%.

Tips for Saving on Texas Auto Insurance

Some motorists can qualify for auto insurance discounts based on certain criteria, including:

1. If you are or have a young driver in the home, you know that teen drivers are more expensive to insure. Young drivers can, however, may get a discount by taking a DPS-approved driver education course.

2. Never let your insurance lapse. Texas law states that companies can hike your premiums if you drove uninsured for more than 30 days in the previous 12 months before your application.

3. Watch your credit score. According to the Texas Department of Insurance and the Office of Public Insurance Counsel, some companies may use your credit history as a factor when calculating your insurance premium. However, an insurance company can’t deny you coverage or cancel your policy based solely on your credit report.

Moving to Texas: Important Information

If you are moving to Texas from another state, don’t forget to take care of your license and car registration. According to TxDMV, you must register your car within 30 days of moving to Texas. To do this, you need to get a vehicle inspection, and then go to the county tax assessor-collector to get a title and registration.

To get a new Texas driver’s license, you must have been living in the state for at least 30 days. However, if you have a valid license from another state, you can surrender your out of state license and get a Texas license without taking any of the knowledge tests. You must do this within 90 days of moving to the state.

Understanding Driving Laws in Texas

Switching to a Texas license from another state’s license is simple because most traffic laws are the same from state to state. However, before you go out on the roads, make sure you read up on unique Texas driving laws.

There are some offenses that Texas considers severe enough for mandatory suspension. While some are obvious, such as felonies and providing false information, there are offenses on a smaller scale you should know, including:

Teen Driving Laws in Texas

In Texas, Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws are in place to help teenagers safely gain experience driving.

Frequently Asked Questions About Texas Auto Insurance

1. Is your insurance valid in other places?

Other U.S. states and Canada will recognize your auto insurance. However, you will need to purchase additional insurance if you plan to go to Mexico, as this country does not accept most types of foreign insurance policies.

2. What are your rights as a consumer?

Texas insurance law has a Bill of Rights that outlines all your rights as a consumer. This includes the right to information from your insurance company, protection from excess limits, and information on payment plans and privacy.

3. Can a company cancel your policy as a result of a speeding ticket?

Yes, especially within the first 60 days of the policy’s implementation, as during this period Texas insurance companies can cancel a policy for any reason. Few insurers will cancel your policy based on one ticket, but they may raise your premium.

Texas Farm Bureau, Allstate and Farmers: How They Compare

Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, Allstate and Farmers all sell car insurance across Texas. Published 2026 rate studies consistently put Texas Farm Bureau among the cheapest insurers in the state, while Allstate and Farmers tend to price well above the Texas average for a driver like ours.

The catch with Texas Farm Bureau is eligibility. You have to buy a paid Farm Bureau membership first, and it sells through local agents rather than online. If you’d rather not join, State Farm and Auto Club (AAA) have the lowest statewide averages in our filed-rate data, just $9 a year apart for full coverage.

Texas Hail, Floods and Why Comprehensive Coverage Matters

Texas sits in Hail Alley, and spring storms regularly damage cars along the I-35 corridor from Dallas–Fort Worth through Waco, Austin and San Antonio, and across the Panhandle and South Plains. The Gulf Coast adds hurricanes and flooding: Hurricane Harvey flooded hundreds of thousands of vehicles around Houston in 2017.

Only comprehensive coverage pays for hail, flood, wind and falling-tree damage to your car. That’s a big part of why full coverage costs so much more than a liability-only policy in Texas, and why dropping it is risky if you park outside. If you need a lower premium, raising your deductible is usually safer than dropping comprehensive.

How Does Your Driving Record Affect Your Texas Car Insurance Rate?

Our averages are for a driver with no accidents or violations. Tickets and at-fault crashes raise your premium, and a DWI raises it the most. A DWI conviction in Texas usually also requires an SR-22 certificate of insurance, and repeat offenses within five years require an ignition interlock device.

Surcharges usually fade after three to five years. Because each insurer weighs violations differently, a driver with a ticket or accident on their record has even more to gain from comparing quotes.

How Much Does Credit Score Affect Your Texas Car Insurance Rate?

Texas allows insurers to use a credit-based insurance score when setting rates, though an insurer can’t deny or cancel your policy based on credit alone. Our benchmark driver has good credit; drivers with poor credit typically pay considerably more. Improving your credit and then re-shopping your policy is one of the most effective long-term ways to lower your rate in Texas.

The tables below come from an additional InsuranceQuotes rate analysis that uses its own driver profile and coverage assumptions, so the dollar amounts differ from the Texas averages above. Use them to see how vehicle type, a newer car and driver age change what you pay.
