Progressive, one of the country’s largest auto insurers, is rolling out its pay-as-you-drive insurance program across the country.

Under Progressive’s Snapshot program, safe drivers and those who drive less are more likely to get a discount. The Snapshot program already is in place in 32 states, including Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Texas.
Progressive CEO Glenn Renwick told Wall Street analysts about the Snapshot expansion during a conference call, BestWire reported.
Under the Snapshot program, Progressive says drivers can save up to 30 percent on auto insurance. A small device is plugged into a diagnostic port of an insured person’s car, and the device records and sends data — including speed and time of day the car is being driven — back to the company. After 30 days, a customer finds out whether he’s eligible for a discount, based on his driving habits. After six months, Progressive determines the renewal discount, and the customer returns the device to the insurer.
The Snapshot device doesn’t contain GPS, so it doesn’t track a vehicle’s location, Progressive says.
“Snapshot is voluntary and customers can opt out at any time. It won’t make customers’ rates go up,” Progressive says on its website.
